Rob Huff takes last-minute pole position at a wet Ningbo circuit
Rob Huff has taken his second straight pole position in the China Touring Car Championship at Ningbo, displacing fellow Briton Dan Lloyd in the final moments of the session in his SAIC VW333 Racing Volkswagen Lamando.
The CTCC qualifying session started immediately after the WTCC’s first practice session, with Huff missing the first few minutes as he swapped over from his Münnich Motorsport Citroën.
Jim Ka To set the early pace in the Kia K3, before the red flags were out after eight minutes when Changan Ford’s best-placed driver in the championship, Martin Cao, stopped out on circuit after completing just one lap.
When the session resumed, Huff quickly jumped to first in the Lamando GTS, but was soon bettered by Lloyd in the Beijing BAIC Senova D70, just 0.024 faster.
Lloyd’s time stood for the bulk of the session, with a last-minute improvement for Huff putting him back on top, just under two-tenths of a second ahead.
Juan Carlos Zhu qualified third in his BAIC Senova D70, with the Volkswagen of Rodolfo Avila fourth.
Leo Yi Hong Li was fifth fastest, leading a train of four Kia K3s, with team-mates Alex Fontana, Leo Yi Hong Li and Jason Zhang right behind him.
Jiang Tengyi was ninth in the SW333 Volkswagen, with reigning champion Zheng Zhen Dong tenth.
Championship leader David Zhu was 11th fastest in his Senova, while Andy Yan was the fastest of the Changan Ford FRD Team Focuses, 12th fastest overall.
The race is scheduled for 13:50 CST (07:50 CET).
