Rob Huff: “It’s obvious the Hyundais would have been on the front row”

Team WRT’s Rob Huff was delighted to take pole position on his final outing of the season in the TCR International Series at Zhejiang in China, but the Briton admitted that the pace of the new Hyundai i30 N TCR would certainly have seen the South Korean manufacturer secure the front row should it have been able to participate in Q2.

Huff put his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR on pole on his final lap in Q2, snatching pole away from his team-mate Jean-Karl Vernay, who has retaken the lead of the championship with his four points for pole.

“I’m very happy with today’s performance, and our weekend’s performance on the whole,” said Huff. “Our Leopard Volkswagens have been at the front all weekend, but it’s pretty obvious that if the Hyundai was allowed to be there, it would be a Hyundai front row.

“I’m pleased for JK and myself, as it’s my last TCR race of the year, but I’ll try and do my best for JK tomorrow. It’s been a tough year; it’s the first time I’ve ever rolled a car back in Salzburg, and the team have been trying really hard to give us a car that can win the championship, so this result is for them.”

Vernay, who won his TCR China race just before qualifying by 20 seconds and will start second on the grid added: “It was a great effort from the team. The car was great, the team did a really good job. Rob’s been on the pace all weekend, with (TCR China) I’ve had more track time, but I couldn’t beat him – but we’ve scored some more points and will start on the front row, so we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”
