Ash Sutton: “My focus now is firmly on Turkington”
Ash Sutton leaves Rockingham with a twelve point lead in the BTCC standings after another strong showing on a weekend where the battle for honours moved towards becoming a two-horse race.
The Team BMR driver secured second place in the opening race of the weekend with a final lap move on the Honda of Jack Goff before romping to victory in race two – the sixth time this season that the youngster has taken to the top step of the podium.
Disastrous weekends for both Gordon Shedden and Rob Collard – who scored just four and eight points respectively – mean they have slipped back in the race to the crown, with Sutton insisting it was closest rival Colin Turkington who he was now focused on.
“There is a nice margin back to third place after this weekend so for me, the focus now is on making sure I’m around Turkington on track,” he said. “I have to beat him when I can and then just follow him as closely as possible when I need to as it’s about small points from here on it.
“Neither of us can afford a mistake and I think it’s going to be quite even. We both have rear-wheel drive cars and it’s simply a case of whoever does the best job is going to win it,
“For sure we maximised what we had this weekend and I think we drew everything that we could from the car. Second place in race one was good and then with the improvements we made to the car for race two, a win was great.
“More points on the board in race three is what it’s all about and we’re in a good position at the end of the weekend.”
