Lucas Auer sets the pace in second practice at Lausitzring
Mercedes AMG driver Lucas Auer was the fastest driver of the second free practice session held this morning at the Lausitzring, host of the second round of the 2017 DTM season, with the Austrian and his team-mate Robert Wickens being the only drivers to break the 1:17 barrier around the bumpy track.
The closing minutes of the session saw the entire field taking to the track for the final preparations, with dark clouds threatening with rain over the Lausitzring. Standings leader Auer beat his team-mate to take the first position with a time of 1:16.826.
Jamie Green improved claimed third, 0.266 seconds off the pace, followed by Mercedes AMG’s drivers Gary Paffett and Maro Engel.
Mike Rockenfeller was sixth, with fellow Audi Sport drivers René Rast and Mattias Ekström next, with the Swede 0.577 seconds off the top time.
Tom Blomqvist and Marco Wittmann completed the top ten for BMW Motorsport, with the reigning champion just 0.654 seconds away from Auer, with the Bavarian manufacturer taking a conservative approach to save tyres for today’s qualifying and race.
Qualifying for Race 1 is scheduled for 10:15 CET.
