Miguel Molina: “I pushed as much as I could”

Miguel Molina scored his second victory of the season, and third of his DTM career at Hockenheim today, after a dominating the first race from the start until the chequered flag.

The Spaniard, starting from the second spot on the grid, outbraked BMW’s António Félix Da Costa in Turn 1 and managed to stay ahead after the pair came together several times during the first lap. With the BMW driver focussed on helping championship contender Marco Wittmann, Molina remained unchallenged until the end.

“The weekend didn’t start well, and I wasn’t happy with my car yesterday and this morning,” Molina told TouringCarTimes. “We made a few changes after second free practice and managed a perfect lap in qualifying, so we got on the front row of the grid.”

With Audi Sport needing the best results possible to keep theirs and Edoardo Mortara’s title chances alive, Molina had a clear strategy: “The start was key, I managed to get away well and stay at front. I pushed as much as I could to open a gap and get the BMW out of DRS distance. Then I saved some tyres in case I would have to fight during the last part of the race. I was very happy with the car because it was easy to drive. “

Asked about his chances of staying with Audi in the DTM next year, the Spaniard said: “I have two victories this year, but there is still one race to go, so that count could be higher tomorrow! The DTM is a very close competition and it’s very difficult to win races. Yet, here I am, sitting with the guys fighting for the title. I think I have had a strong season and been there for Audi when they have needed me, so I hope they bear that in mind when they plan for next year.”
