Marco Wittmann expecting a close fight at Hockenheim

BMW Motorsport driver Marco Wittmann is in a prime position to win his second DTM title this weekend with a 14-point lead over Audi’s Edoardo Mortara, but refuses to be overly confident before the final chequered flag is out.

“I think I’m in a pretty good position, to be honest,” Wittmann said to TouringCarTimes. “14 points of a gap is always good to have, so first of all, it will be do to a good weekend in qualifying, which is always very important in DTM. Then the aim is to stay in front of “Edo” and Jamie, and that would at least be the optimum for me.”

Hockenheim braces itself for a thrilling finale, with the battle between Wittmann and Mortara paralleled by the manufacturers’ fight between BMW Motorsport and Audi Sport: “I know it will be tight and Hockenheim is always pretty special, as all three manufacturers will be pretty close here, and who knows what’s going to happen here. It’s always pretty-action packed, especially when you look back at the first two races of the season. I think it will be interesting.”

Wittmann became the then youngest ever DTM champion back in 2014. This weekend he could set a new youth record at being double champion and experience is on his side: “I would not say that it is a disadvantage, but Edo and Jamie are chasing their first title. But we all try our best out on track and score as many points as possible, see where we end up.”
