Canadian Touring Car Championship could add TCR cars from 2017
The Canadian Touring Car Championship has said they could open up their sporting regulations to allow TCR class cars to compete as early as next season, as well GT4 class cars, with their 2017 calendar due to be released soon.
The championship which competes in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario is looking at allowing cars built for the SRO’s GT4 class as well as the burgeoning TCR class which is promoted principally by former WTCC boss Marcello Lotti’s TCR International Series.
The championship presently allows for a number of production based touring cars to compete with muscle car-style low-end GT cars, such as Ford Mustangs, with a balance of performance calculation to equalise within the classes.
The announcement by the Canadian Touring Car Championship follows similar moves hinted at in North America, particularly on the US circuit racing scene.
“I have been speaking with my colleagues at IMSA and World Challenge and they are looking at a variety of ways to achieve similar goals,” said CTCC (Canadian) present John Bondar.
“In particular, they are planning to incorporate both GT4 and TCR spec cars into their rules. We will definitely incorporate some GT4 spec vehicles into our rules and consider how TCR spec vehicles may fit into our series as well.”
“(Balance of performance) BOP is not easy but we have found a formula that has worked well for CTCC. However, with the potential addition of GT4 and TCR, we will take a different look at the possibilities,” added Bondar.
“With the potential inclusion of GT4 and TCR along with the number of new car-builds and new cars, the 11th season of CTCC racing is shaping up to be another great one.”
