Edoardo Mortara tops first free practice at the Hungaroring

Audi driver Edoardo Mortara was the fastest driver in the first free practice session held at the Hungaroring this afternoon, ahead of Mercedes AMG’s Robert Wickens.

The Team Abt Sportsline completed a best lap of 1:36.673 around the track, which was resurfaced this year, and just 0.155 off the circuit’s record, set two years ago by Marco Wittmann. The Italian was one of the busiest men in the field, completing 20 flying laps.

Team HWA’s Robert Wickens had a competitive session in second place, 0.165 seconds off Mortara’s time, and ahead of Audi drivers Nico Müller and Mattias Ekström.

Team Mücke’s Lucas Auer was fifth 0.303 seconds behind Mortara, followed by fellow Mercedes AMG drivers Gary Paffett, Christian Vietoris and Felix Rosenqvist.

Miguel Molina was ninth for Audi Sport, followed by Team Rosberg’s Jamie Green, 0.652 seconds behind the leader.

The BMW M4 DTMs struggled with pace, with Marco Wittmann being the fastest man for the Bavarian manufacturer in 11th place, just 0.002 seconds behind Green.

The session was largely trouble-free, with the drivers performing practice starts on the main straight at the end.

The car are back on track tomorrow morning at 10:45 CET for the second free practice session.
