Opel Astra TCR returns to the track in Singapore

The Opel Astra TCR will be back on track in the TCR International Series in the forthcoming round of the championship at Singapore, supporting for Formula 1 World Championship for the second time this season.

The Astra hasn’t been seen on circuit since the opening round of the series at Bahrain back in March, with Opel Motorsport taking the car away to focus on its development away from the circuit.

The car was driven by Jordi Oriola, younger brother of front-runner Pepe, and Andrea Belicchi in Bahrain, with the cars run by Target Competition, but the Italian squad have since switched to running a combination of SEAT León TCRs and Honda Civic TCRs in the TCR International and Germany series.

The Opel Astra has been racing competitively in the national TCR series in Europe, with a single car run by DG Sport Compétition in the TCR Benelux series with a car for Pierre-Yves Corthals and Frédéric Caprasse, which was three-times a winner last time out in Zandvoort.

Three Opel Astra TCRs made an appearance in the German series at the Nürburgring, with Oriola and Corthals driving two cars run by DG Sport, with the team securing pole position and putting two cars on the podium, while Lubner Motorsport ran a single car for female racer Jasmin Preisig.

It’s the DG Sport car used in the Benelux series which will race in Singapore with Oriola set to be behind the wheel, before it’s returned to Europe to finish the season, with Corthals and Caprasse in contention for the drivers’ title, 49.5 points behind Boutsen-Ginion Honda driver Stéphane Lémeret.
