Robert Wickens believes a better result was on the cards
Mercedes AMG driver Robert Wickens has completed a good weekend in Lausitzring, host of the third round of the 2016 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. The Canadian got two podium finishes in third position in both races, leaving the track located Southeast of Berlin as the standings leader.
Wickens, however, wasn’t happy with the outcome of the race. “I had good pace at the beginning, maybe not as good as Lucas, but it was going well”, the Canadian told TouringCarTimes. “Maybe I couldn’t challenge for the victory, but I could have been second today. I know it sounds strange to complain after two podiums, but I feel I could have done better.”
The Canadian thinks the team’s strategy hampered his progress: “The pit stops were in the wrong sequence. The tyre change itself wasn’t bad, but I came out behind Tomczyk and Scheider, who were fighting between them. By the time I managed to get ahead of them, the tyres had lost their best, and I think that cost me the performance that I needed towards the end to defend from Ekström.”
After three rounds, Robert Wickens leads the Drivers’ standings with 58 points, three more than BMW’s Marco Wittmann. Looking ahead, the Canadian hopes to keep the momentum going: “Norisring has been good for me in the past, but we still have to be cautious and see where we are with the new car. I hope to do well or, at least, to keep scoring points, as everything is so tight in the DTM. But yeah, it’s good to lead the championship.”
The next round of the DTM takes place at Norisring, from the 24th to the 26th of June.
