Volvo V60 Polestar becomes the new WTCC safety car
Polestar, the performance brand of Volvo Cars, have now revealed the Volvo V60 Polestar Safety Car, which will take over from the Alfa Romeo 4C after a two-year stint as the World Touring Car Championship’s designated safety car this year.
The blue V60 Polestar will lead the field on the formation lap, and be deployed if needed to lead the field in the case of an accident.
“It was an easy decision to start a cooperation with the WTCC on the Official Safety Car,” said Polestar’s head of motorsport Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin. “This allows us to close the circle from track to road by showcasing customers the take-home alternative of our racing car technology in the form of the Volvo V60 Polestar Safety Car, at the same time being part of the vital and extensive safety work of the championship.”
The Volvo V60 Safety Car is modified from the road-going model fitted with a roll-cage and carries the necessary rescue and safety equipment mandated by the FIA and WTCC promoter Eurosport Events.
“Last October we welcomed Polestar’s long-term commitment to the WTCC as a manufacturer. Now we welcome Polestar as the new Official Safety Car partner of the WTCC, an exclusive opportunity which will allow them to promote their extremely safe and high-performing V60 Polestar flagship model around the world,” said head of Eurosport Events François Ribeiro.
Volvo takes over from Alfa Romeo as the supplier of the safety car after two years. In 2013, there was no regular safety car, with Maseratis, Chevrolets, Volvos and Bentleys among others fulfilling the role during the season. Prior to this, in 2012, Chevrolet provided the safety cars for the majority of the season, fielding the Volt as well as the muscle car Camaro during the course of the year.
