Chaz Mostert grabs Race 2 pole in Adelaide on his V8 Supercars return
Chaz Mostert was fast on his return to the V8 Supercars Championship, now running in SuperCheap Auto colours for Prodrive Racing Australia, after Jamie Whincup found himself knocked off a potential pole position spot for the second session in a row.
Mostert’s time of 1:20.3724 put all doubts to bed after the 23-year-old’s horrific crash at Bathurst last October, which put him out for the rest of the season.
“(I) didn’t really see that coming this weekend, just wanted to ease back into it,” said Mostert.
“I’ll still be up the pointy end which is great…I’m a bit lost for words, I can’t really describe it. It’s kind of like my first pole all over again.”
Whincup will start from second position for both of tomorrow’s races in the Triple Eight Holden, now back racing with #88, with Scott McLaughlin third again in the Garry Rogers Motorsport Volvo S60.
James Courtney was fourth quickest in the Holden Racing Team Commodore, with Triple Eight’s new signing Shane van Gisbergen fifth fastest.
For Race 2, Michael Caruso was the best placed of the Nissan’s in sixth, one spot ahead of Race 1 pole-sitter Scott Pye’s DJR Penske Ford Falcon.
Jason Bright was just over half a second down on Mostert’s time in the Brad Jone Racing Holden in eighth, while title protagonists from last year, Craig Lowndes (Triple Eight) and Mark Winterbottom (Prodrive) will line up ninth and tenth respectively.
Race 1 takes place on Saturday at 13:50 ACDT, with Race 2 at 16:15.
