Stefano Comini: “Psychological strength gave me the title”

An emotional Stefano Comini celebrated his TCR International Series title in style, by also winning the Macau Guia Race 2.0T, adding his name to a Hall of Fame which includes the likes of Roberto Ravaglia, Emanuele Pirro, Andy Priaulx and of course eight-times winner Rob Huff.

The Swiss had no words to explain his feelings: “I can’t pay tribute in words, it’s such a strong feeling,” said Comini to TouringCarTimes. “Honestly I feel really relaxed, it could be down to the adrenaline dropping, but I just want to go home, get married (on Wednesday) and relax for a week.”

The 2015 champion is thrilled at having taken the first title in the history of the series: “I am proud to be in the history of the TCR International Series, which is the future. I would like to be back next year. I am also very happy to have won in Macau on my first visit to this fantastic track, I fell in love with it at first sight and it adds to the sweet taste of this fantastic day.”

Back to the races, the Swiss kept his position despite attacks from title rival Pepe Oriola: “He knew he had to pass me, but so did I, so I defended and it worked out. Honestly I think that this psychological strength is what gave me the title. Pepe did push me a couple of times, and in the end retired because he hit me at Lisboa. I wouldn’t have done the same, but on the other hand I understand his position and I know why he did it. I have no problem with that, it was an element I had to take into consideration during the race.”

Despite only needing a second place to be crowned champion, Comini was determined not to let Oriola through: “First of all I really wanted this win, a victory in Macau is something really special. I also knew Jordi (Oriola, Pepe’s brother) was behind us, so I could not be sure of anything. Pushing and defending was the best strategy, and it worked out in the end.”

The Target Competition driver did not expect to win before the weekend: “I had no idea as to whether I would be quick or not around here, this place is so different from anything else. When I came here I realised I loved the track, even more than the Nordschleife. I love driving between the walls, it is so unforgiving and so exciting, so much that if I fail to come back with TCR I would like to race here even in another car, I want to come back! To be honest Rob Huff was on a completely different level, but once he crashed out in the first corner I knew I had a chance and, like I said, it even improves the day.”

The 2015 TCR International Series champion dedicated his title to himself and to motorsport enthusiasts, including potential racing drivers: “I want to dedicate this title to myself, I worked so hard and I struggled a lot with the budget, so to be here was a victory already, which put the pressure entirely on my opponents. I also want to dedicate this to the fans, who have been fantastic all year. I want to send a message to all of those drivers who have talent but no budget, and fight against the struggles of this sport. The title I took today means you can do it if you are determined and talented, so keep on dreaming and work hard!”

Comini also praised title rival Pepe Oriola: “He is a very fast driver, and this day will make him stronger. He is very young and very talented, and has a bright future ahead of him. Hopefully we will fight for the title for many years to come.”
