Norberto Fontana claims pole position for Chevrolet in Mendoza
Equipo YPF Chevrolet driver Norberto Fontana took pole position for the tenth round of the Argentinian Super TC 2000 Championship at the Autódromo Ciudad de San Martín in Mendoza, outqualifying Fiat’s José Manuel Urcera by just under a tenth of a second.
The two-time TC 2000 champion lapped the 4.2km circuit with a time of 1:29.865 in the third and final segment of qualifying to claim pole position, run close by Urcera’s Fiat Linea, with Peugeot’s Agustín Canapino setting the third fastest time.
There were four manufacturers in the top four positions, with Renault’s Leonel Pernía fourth quickest in the Fluence, with Fiat’s Facundo Chapur setting the fifth fastest time for the factory Fiat squad.
The top two drivers in the championship qualified next to each other on the time sheets, with points leader Néstor Girolami making a mistake on his run in Q3 and therefore setting the tenth fastest time, over 12 seconds off of Fontana’s time.
Girolami’s closest rival in the standings, Toyota driver Matías Rossi, missed out on the top ten in Q2 by just seven-hundredths of a second and will start from 11th in his Corolla.
The 24 lap race is set to take place at 12:35 ART.
