Pascal Wehrlein is the new DTM champion
Mercedes AMG driver Pascal Wehrlein clinched his first ever DTM Drivers’ title at today’s Race 1 in Hockenheim, host of the ninth and final round of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, becoming the youngest driver to do so.
Wehrlein started the race from 13th place on the grid. A number of incidents in the first lap obligued Edoardo Mortara to go through the pits to change tyres after a puncture. Mattias Ekström lost positions and was pushed out of the track by Robert Wickens. The Swede managed to continue, but behind his rival, to finish ninth. The race was won by Timo Scheider.
The HWA AG driver had a long fight with BMW’s Martin Tomczyk, managing to climb positions to finish in eighth place.
Pascal Wehrlein, who turns 21 tomorrow, becomes the youngest ever DTM champion, beating Marco Wittmann for more than 2 years. The young German is the first Drivers’ champion for Mercedes AMG since Paul Di Resta back in 2010.
