Scott McLaughlin: “That was the scariest lap of my life”
Garry Rogers Motorsport driver Scott McLaughlin qualified his Volvo S60, shared with Alex Prémat this weekend, in second on the grid for the 2015 Bathurst 1000 in a dramatic top ten shootout, which was hit by heavy rain.
McLaughlin was on the track just after Rod Nash Racing’s David Reynolds, and though the rain had begun to fall again, there was still enough grip for the young New Zealander to set the second fastest time before the conditions deteriorated, with those running later in the shootout winding up near the back of the top ten.
“It’s pretty cool as that was the hardest and most scariest lap of my life,” said McLaughlin.
“Obviously we were very lucky there with the rain, me and Dave (Reynolds) got the track at the right time and probably (Jason) Brighty as well,” he admitted.
“The hardest thing was you didn’t know where to brake, you didn’t know how much road you could use or where it was going to be slippery especially now with the new surface, so hopefully me and French (Alex Prémat) can make up for all the problems last year.”
