Gianni Morbidelli: “I had more than just engine power”
Gianni Morbidelli dominated the Monza weekend, scoring a double win at home as well as taking pole position, bagging some 55 points. Although the second race is still sub-judice due to the contact the WestCoast Racing driver had with Target Competition’s Stefano Comini.
“We had an incredible fight and put on a great show, so hopefully the fans are happy,” said Morbidelli. “As for me, I have to thank WestCoast Racing. We’ve been quick ever since Friday, but I think we showed today that my real strength was in Ascari and Parabolica.”
The Honda driver criticized the emphasis put on the engine power, as he feels the biggest advantage was at the two corners: “SEAT people go with the engine power mantra, but truth is that in Monza if you are quick on the last corner you are obviously very fast on the straight. I’m sorry about this, because our level of performance was great, but we did not have as much an advantage as SEAT would have thought. In the end we won two races, had a perfect weekend and are leading the championship, so that’s all that matters.”
Morbidelli also underlined braking problems he had in both races: “I had issues with the brakes after about two laps already, my brake pedal was very long and I risked making mistakes in some occasions because of this. This is Monza though, you must use your brakes and the track is very tough on them. I didn’t have the bite I would have liked to have, but it worked out anyway, I was obviously over the limit with the brakes.”
Speaking of his contact with Comini, Morbidelli said to TouringCarTimes: “I really don’t understand all this fuss. He was on the outside and I had to do the corner, I had to be somewhere, and we made contact. To me that was nothing more than a racing incident.”
Morbidelli is now in the lead of the championship, 14 points ahead of rival Stefano Comini
