Adam Morgan delighted with lights-to-flag victory

It was a dream come true for Adam Morgan as he took a lights-to-flag victory in the final race at Thruxton, the second trip to the top step of his BTCC career.

Morgan got pole from the reverse grid draw and never looked back, immediately gapping Andrew Jordan’s MG and setting the fastest lap in the process.

“It’s incredible,” Morgan told TouringCarTimes. “A lights to flag victory is something I’ve dreamed of doing for ages and it’s an amazing feeling, not just for myself but the whole team, we all get on so well and it makes that victory all the more sweet when I can come back in and see how happy everyone is.”

Morgan’s lead came under threat on lap eight when the safety car came out for Warren Scott’s incident at Noble, but Morgan controlled the restart and soon had pulled out another sizeable gap on Jordan.

“I kinda knew when I saw Warren’s car in the barrier after Noble I sensed the Safety Car was coming,” he explained. “I was confident. I knew the car had the pace to pull away again so I just had to start thinking about how to get the break on Andy, put my foot down and away it went again.”

Tyres had been an issue for many teams at Thruxton, but the gap at the sharp end of the field allowed the Mercedes driver to manage his pace and ensure he got to the end.

“It’s always in the back of your mind around Thruxton,” Morgan explained to TouringCarTimes. “My engineer came on the radio twice telling me to slow down a little bit because I had a gap, the car just felt absolutely amazing and I felt I could push all the way to the end. I backed off the last three four laps and even then the car was still quick, it was amazing.”
