Andy Wilmot out of rest of Brands Hatch weekend

A litany of issues have forced Welch Motorsport’s Andy Wilmot to withdraw from the rest of the Brands Hatch weekend.

Wilmot ran into several problems with his Proton Gen-2 on Saturday, including sensor issues, exhaust failure and another as-yet undiagnosed problem which the team believe was oil pressure related.

They were unable to fix them overnight, meaning Wilmot sat out the first race, and has now taken the decision to miss the rest of the meeting and concentrate on fixing the car for Donington Park.

Speaking to TouringCarTimes, Wilmot said: “That’s it for the day. We’ve got to throw in the towel for this weekend but we’re holding out hope that everything will be fine for Donington.

“Yesterday we had some communication faults when Cosworth updated and some of our older sensors didn’t like it. We sorted that issue out and in free practice two we had an issue with a boost sensor, which we changed and it was OK. Then we had an exhaust blow.

“In qualifying we went out on very low boost, as we were just running the engine in. When we went to go back out after the red flag the car just wouldn’t pull away. As high as I would rev it, when you let the clutch out it just died, but it would sit there on idle.

“We think it’s an oil pressure issue but we’re not 100 per cent sure.”

Looking ahead to the next race, Wilmot said he was staying positive.

He said: “You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth. I think good things will come out of this, and it’s another thing learned. It’s an issue the team has never had before and I feel absolutely gutted about it.

“You’ve just got to keep smiling and never give up.”
