Marco Wittmann tops second practice
BMW Team RMG’s Marco Wittman vowed to keep fighting until the end, despite clinching the drivers’ title two races ago, and as such he was the fastest driver on the second free practice session celebrated at Hockenheim this morning. Wittmann set a fastest time of 1:33.585, improving by six tenths his best lap from the early morning.
The session wasn’t exempt of trouble, as it had to be red flagged no less than three times. First was just 10 minutes into the session, when Vitaly Petrov (Mücke Motorsport) lost a wheel which wasn’t properly fixed.
It would be because of Petrov the second time, as the Russian went off at Sachs curve. Third red flag came with just 20 minutes on the clock, when Jamie Green (Audi Team Rosberg) buried his RS 5 DTM in the gravel at the same point.
As it had happened in the morning, the times were very close, with 21 drivers within a second. Only Audi’s Edoardo Mortara scored a time over a second adrift from Wittmann’s.
BMW Team RBM’s Joey Hand was second fastest, just 0.105 seconds behind the 2014 champion.
Miguel Molina was Audi’s fastest driver in third. The Spaniard completed key setup work and clocked a fastest time of 1:33.771. Fourth fastest was his former team mate at Audi Team Phoenix Mike Rockenfeller.
António Félix Da Costa was fifth, the Portuguese having a solid weekend so far, followed by Audi’s Adrien Tambay and Da Costa’s team mate at BMW Team MTEK, Timo Glock.
Nico Müller (Audi Team Rosberg), Bruno Spengler (BMW Team Schnitzer) and Mattias Ekström (Audi Team Abt Sportsline) completed the top-10, the Swede only 0.461 seconds behind Marco Wittmann.
The third red flag hampered most drivers’ final run, which is usually made with brand new tyres in preparation for qualifying.
The qualifying session is scheduled for 14:45 CEST.
