Dusan Borkovic leading drive for aid after Serbian floods
Serbia’s first representative in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, Dusan Borkovic, is one of the country’s top sporting stars who is leading a push to raise international awareness and raise aid after serious floods have hit his home country its neighbours last week, just a few days after the first ever cancellation of a WTCC race due to wet conditions at the Slovakiaring, 600km away.
The 29-year-old has been reaching out to his fellow drivers, which has seen the cause promoted by Honda works driver Tiago Monteiro and ROAL Motorsport’s Tom Coronel, the popular Dutch driver with the largest social media presence on the grid, and his Campos Racing team-mate Hugo Valente.
The floods are considered the worst in 120 years, affecting Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, with landslides burying houses and disturbing landmines left after the war.
Three months worth of rain hit the region in just three days, with fresh warnings today that the banks of the River Sava are threatening to burst, which could affect the country’s biggest coal-fired power station, the Tesla power plant, 40km from Serbia’s capital Belgrade.
Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes and so far 43 people have been reported dead as a result of the floods, with figures feared to rise in the coming days.
