Colin Turkington happy to end with podium

Colin Turkington said he was happy to end the Donington Park weekend with a podium, despite the disappointment of losing a win to Gordon Shedden on the final corner of the last lap.

The West Surrey Racing man took fifth in the damp first race and sixth in the wet second, both sets of conditions which are not particularly suited to the rear-wheel drive BMW 125i.

The reverse grid draw was kind to the 2009 champion, but the win was not to be, as Shedden made the move stick in the dying embers of the race.

The team appealed the result of the race, but the stewards ruled in favour of Shedden and the Honda Racing Team.

“It is disappointing not to cross the line first, but it was still a strong weekend. It hasn’t been easy, especially in the wet, but it is nice to finish with a podium,” said Turkington to TouringCarTimes.

“They were really tough conditions for us, and it is just important to score, and minimise the loss to the other guys who are fast.

“We’re just chipping away at it, and we have to work hard to make the car fast, but we are making progress.”

On the incident with Shedden, Turkington said: “When you’re behind the wheel it’s over in a flash. Gordon has passed me through the gravel, not on the track, and there’s new track limit rules this year which say you’ve got to keep four wheels on the black stuff.”
