Andrew Jordan wins eventful second race at Brands Hatch
Andrew Jordan doubled up in a dramatic second race at Brands Hatch, leading home Gordon Shedden and Colin Turkington after a breathless encounter which featured two safety cars.
As with the first race, Eurotech Racing’s Jordan led every lap and managed to hold off Honda Racing Team’s Shedden, who appeared to be faster but could not make his way past.
West Surrey Racing’s Turkington made a number of bold passing moves in his BMW 125i to take third, and there was much incident and excitement behind.
There was drama from the very start when front row starter Jason Plato struggled to get away from the line while performing a system reset in his MG6; the massed ranks of the grid all managing to avoid him as he got moving again.
Matt Neal and Rob Collard then made contact going through Paddock Hill, and had a synchronised slide before both gathering it all together and maintaining their positions, while Chris Stockton departed into the gravel in his BTC Racing Chevrolet Cruze, triggering the first safety car.
After it departed, Shedden made a big attempt to pass Jordan at Paddock Hill on lap seven, but was unable to make it stick. Behind him, Turkington passed team-mates Rob Collard and Nick Foster in quick succession at Paddock Hill, then put a great move on Neal’s Honda Civic Tourer at the same corner on lap 14, eventually making it stick into Druids.
Neal finished fourth ahead of the fast starting Foster, Collard and Aron Smith, with Adam Morgan, Tom Ingram and Fabrizio Giovanardi completing the top 10.
Behind them, Plato managed to fight through from the back to finish 14th, while it was another trying race for Alain Menu in the Team BMR Volkswagen CC in 17th.
The second safety car was triggered on lap 20 after an incident involving Eurotech Racing’s Martin Depper and Triple Eight’s Marc Hynes. Hynes got a run on Depper exiting Graham Hill Bend and made contact with the rear left of the Honda Civic, which hit the wall on the inside.
There was disappointment for Rob Austin, who failed to get away on the formation lap from fifth on the grid after a prop shaft failure . His Audi A4 was pushed into the pitlane and eventually rejoined on lap 15.
The final race of the day gets under way at 17:02 BST. The draw for the reverse grid has put sixth placed Rob Collard on pole position.
