Andrew Jordan fastest in shortened second practice at Brands Hatch

Championship leader Andrew Jordan topped the times in a close second practice session at Brands Hatch, which was shortened by a roll for Aron Smith.

Motorbase Performance’s Smith crashed heavily in his Ford Focus on the run up to Druids after just 11 minutes of running, while trying to avoid the Toyotas of Frank Wrathall and Ollie Jackson.

His car landed on its side and caused heavy damage to the armco barrier, necessitating lengthy repairs. Smith escaped injury, but was taken to the medical centre as a precaution.

Following a 35 minute delay a further 15 minutes of running was scheduled, and Eurotech Racing’s Jordan set his best time of 1.31.988 with five to go.

He was just 0.005 ahead of Triple Eight MG’s Jason Plato, and 0.071 ahead of Plato’s team-mate Sam Tordoff, with Honda Racing Team’s Gordon Shedden and West Surrey Racing’s Colin Turkington completing the top five.

Frank Wrathall, Tom Onslow-Cole and Adam Morgan were next, while the time Smith set before his accident was still good enough for ninth.

Rob Collard completed the top 10, with the injury-afflicted Matt Neal the slowest of the title contenders in 13th in his Honda Civic.

JWT Performance’s Lea Wood was again the fastest Jack Sears Trophy runner in 21st, just ahead of Motorbase Performance’s Liam Griffin. Shaun Hollamby didn’t set a time in the AmD Tuning Volkswagen Golf.

The green light for the half-hour qualifying session is at 15:45 BST.
