Daniel Abt not ruling out 2014 DTM seat

GP2 driver, Daniel Abt, is not ruling out a switch to the DTM in 2014, despite wanting to continue in the Formula 1 feeder series.

The son of the Abt DTM team team principal, Hans-Jurgen Abt, the 20-year old joined the ART GP2 team alongside James Calado for 2013, after making the step up from GP3 at the start of this season.

Abt finished second in the 2012 GP3 championship, but has had a mixed 2013 GP2 season so far. He currently lies 20th in the drivers’ standings, whilst team-mate Calado is fifth and won the sprint race at Spa Francorchamps.

When asked by TouringCarTimes if he would be tempted to switch to DTM in the future, Abt replied: “Maybe. I mean the chance is always there and it’s a good option, but for sure I will try and carry on in GP2 next year.

“It’s tough to say if I’d drive for Abt, as it depends on the circumstances and to be honest, I haven’t thought about it.

“However, if there comes a point where there is a good offer and whatever, then I’ll have to think about what’s best for me.”

Abt currently drives the Audi RS 5 DTM ‘taxi’; a specially prepared two-seater DTM car, for the manufacturer’s guests on Saturdays during race weekends.
