Second win of the year for Wang Rue & Volkswagen at Chengdu

Shanghai VW 333 Racing dominated the fifth round of the 2013 China Touring Car Championship at the Chengdu Goldenport Circuit, with Wang Rue leading a Volkswagen 1-2-3 on race day.

Wang had secured pole position on Saturday ahead of his two team-mates, but a great start from Chang’an Ford FRD team’s Jiang Tengyi saw Jiang take the lead early on, but Wang was able to retake the lead from the Focus on the second lap of the race.

Jiang was able to hold off the second best placed Volkswagen Polo of Han Han, until all of the Fords ran into tyre trouble late in the race, with Jiang and team-mates Andy Yan and Rainey He all forced to pit for fresh rubber.

The G Racing Chevrolet of Zhang Zhi Qiang and the Kia K2 of Huang Chu Han both collided and retired from the race, with Zhang’s team-mate Kenneth Look also retiring with a tyre problem on lap 13.

Wang’s victory with title rival Andy Yan finishing a lap down in eighth sees the Volkswagen driver right back in the title hunt, with Yan still leading on 48 points but Wang just four points behind.

Volkswagen also close right back up in the manufacturers’ battle and are now just three points behind Chang’an Ford heading to the next round of the CTCC at the Guangdong International Circuit on September 22nd.
