Martin Tomczyk has “learned his lesson” from 2012 Norisring defeat
BMW’s Martin Tomczyk feels he has “learned his lesson” from his 2012 defeat at the Norisring.
Tomczyk had led most of last year’s race but lost victory on the final lap, after Jamie Green, then driving for HWA Mercedes, nosed down the inside of the RMG BMW driver at the final corner to take his fourth win around the Nuremberg circuit by 0.6 seconds.
Despite having felt “extreme disappointment” at losing a home victory for both himself and BMW, Tomczyk feels he has turned this into “extra motivation” for this weekend’s race.
“As far as last year is concerned,” Tomczyk told TouringCarTimes, “I obviously did not enjoy being overtaken in the final corner – not one bit.
“But losing is as much a part of motorsport as winning and I learned my lessons from that experience.”
“All in all, I had a very strong race at the Norisring in 2012, and that gives me extra motivation ahead of the coming weekend.”
Tomczyk also told TouringCarTimes that his current points free run which extends from August last season, is different to when he experienced a similar situation in 2005, when he failed to score in seven of the season’s 10 races.
“This is actually the longest barren spell I have ever been through,” he continued. “I had a similarly bad period in 2005, but back then I was yet to be crowned DTM champion and had different aspirations and expectations.
“With the exception of the Lausitzring, the car has always had the pace, but I have never had the necessary good fortune to be able to convert the car’s potential into points finishes.
“It is very frustrating to see what would have been possible and yet to leave empty-handed through no fault of your own.”
