Jason Plato takes victory in race two at Oulton Park

Jason Plato took a masterful win from pole position in the second race of the day at Oulton Park, again leading every lap of the race to come home ahead of Gordon Shedden and Colin Turkington.

The Triple Eight MG man became only the second driver to win the second race at Oulton carrying maximum weight, since the three-race format was introduced in 2004.

Behind Plato, Honda Racing Team’s Shedden was a solid second, with West Surrey Racing’s Turkington taking the second podium for the new BMW 125i in third.

Plato’s team-mate Sam Tordoff ran second early on, but quickly started losing grip on his soft tyres, and became a sitting duck for the cars behind. He limped home 21st in a crabbing car after contact with Mat Jackson’s Motorbase Performance Ford Focus at the hairpin on the penultimate tour.

Shedden’s team-mate Neal moved up to fourth ahead of Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan, with the top ten completed by the Toyota Avensis pair of Dave Newsham and Adam Morgan, Rob Austin’s Audi A4, Dan Welch’s Proton Persona and Jordan’s team-mate Jeff Smith.

The reverse grid draw handed Smith pole position for the final race of the day.

Lea Wood took his second win of the day in the Jack Sears Trophy, finishing 18th overall in his JWT Performance Vauxhall Vectra, after battling with the tail-end NGTC cars throughout.

The race was interrupted by an early safety car on lap two. Nick Foster tapped West Surrey Racing team-mate Rob Collard into a spin at the hairpin, and Tony Gilham Racing’s Jack Goff took to the grass to avoid them.

Goff limped back with a damage car, which ground to a halt at the pit entry in plumes of smoke, triggering the caution period to remove the blockage.

When racing resumed, Plato continued to extend his lead, while Shedden passed Tordoff in a demon late braking move at Old Hall on lap eight.

Tordoff was then passed for third by Turkington at Old Hall on lap 14, then Jordan passed the MG at the hairpin on lap 15.

The coup de grace for Tordoff was delivered by Jackson on lap 16, with the Motorbase man also losing a lot of time, coming home 20th.

Frank Wrathall was the biggest mover of the race in his Dynojet Toyota Avensis, moving forward from 23rd on the grid to take 12th at the flag.

The final race of the day is at 17:16 BST.
