Darryl O’Young: “We want two good results”

Darryl O’Young has started his new adventure at ROAL Motorsport by setting the tenth fastest lap in the second part of qualifying, and the fastest of all the BMW drivers, meaning he will also be on pole for race two.

“This track is not the ideal one for BMW, we’re all struggling, but it started off well for me as the best-placed BMW and pole position for the second race,” said O’Young to TouringCarTimes.

“Stefano (D’Aste) has shown the potential of the car, so we can be quick. If we manage to find a good set-up we can have a good pace here. Normally, however, the front-wheel driven cars are much stronger in wet conditions.”

O’Young went on from the front wheel drive Chevrolet ruze and SEAT León to the BMW 320 TC, which he has never driven on a wet track before:

“It’s more about gaining confidence in the car. This morning I was improving each lap because I have no experience of (the 320 TC) in the wet. I gave up a lot of laps to try wet starts in the BMW and that should help as well, now it’s about trying to get the most out of the car and staying out of trouble. In the dry I was very comfortable in the car, but on wet tarmac I’m not confident yet.”

Although his main focus is on race two, in which he will start from pole position, O’Young will still push in the first race:

“The plan is to stay out of trouble during the first race. You have to push, of course, because you need two good results, but it’s more important to bring the car home in one piece and try to gain experience and confidence in the 320 TC. For sure we’re open to make changes to the car between the two races in terms of setup.”

The weather itself and the amount of rain will play a part in deciding the setup changes needed between the two races:

“This morning it was really wet but we don’t know how it’s going to be in the afternoon, so that is going to be a factor as well. For us it would be better if the track were a little less wet than this morning.”
