Welch adds S2000 Ford Focus for David Nye

Welch Motorsport will run a Ford Focus ST for 55-year-old David Nye in this year’s British Touring Car Championship. Nye will compete for the Jack Sears Trophy for S2000 cars in his debut BTCC season.

Nye’s most recent racing experience has been on mainland Europe, competing in the Belgian Touring Car Series in 2011 and the Dutch Supercar Challenge last season in a SEAT Supercopa entered by Spork Racing Team.

Nye has previously driven for Welch Motorsport in the SEAT Cupra UK, Spanish Supercopa and Eurocup series between 2008 and 2010.

The car will be one of the Mk. II Ford Focus STs used by Motorbase Performance for the past two seasons, the same type of car Liam Griffin will drive at Motorbase this year in competition for the same trophy.

“I attended a few BTCC meetings last season and was so impressed with the whole package,” said Nye. “Being able to compete on the same grid as the big boys will be fantastic, though I’m sure it will be a steep learning curve.”

Team Principal John Welch added:
“I think it is great that David has decided to join us and race for the Jack Sears Trophy. Experience comes with age, which should stand us in good stead, as it will no doubt be a hard fought competition.”

“As was proved last year the S2000 cars are very quick and reliable, especially in changing conditions, which might just surprise a few NGTCs getting to grips with new technologies. David is a seasoned campaigner and has wanted to be involved with the BTCC for some time and this season is a perfect opportunity.”
