Marco Wittmann confirmed as BMW test and reserve driver
Marco Wittmann has been confirmed as the test and reserve driver for BMW in the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.
“He will contest numerous races within the framework of our customer racing programme. Marco made a very good impression at his DTM test. This is why he will support the six regular DTM drivers in 2012 as the test driver, therefore giving him a chance to gain more valuable experience,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director.
The 22-year-old German has mainly raced single seaters, being a part of the BMW junior racing program in Formula BMW 2007 and 2008, in the past and most recently finished second in the 2011 Formula 3 Euro Series.
“I have always had a link to BMW since the great and informative time I spent in Formula BMW. As such, I am happy to be able to race for BMW in 2012 and to gain DTM experience as a test driver. I am certain I will learn a lot in this new environment,” said Wittmann.
Wittmann is also going to race for BMW in the Z4 GT3 in various races around the world.
“As well as the DTM project, our customer racing programme, spearheaded by the BMW Z4 GT3, also plays an important role in our motorsport portfolio. In Marco Wittmann we welcome a fast and talented driver for our GT programme into our ranks. It is certainly no coincidence that Marco has come through our own junior promotion programme. Having graduated from Formula BMW he forged ahead with his motorsport career. I am delighted he is now returning to us,” said Marquardt.
