Cerqui dominates and closes in title standings

Alberto Cerqui won the second race in his Superstars career at Mugello. Starting from pole, the Team BMW Italia driver dominated the race from lights to flag, closing in on Bertolini and Ferrara in the championship standings. Alessandro Pier Guidi came second in his Maserati Quattroporte, ahead of Max Pigoli.

After an aborted start, championship contender Andrea Bertolini, who had to start from the back of the grid after receiving a penalty, was involved in contact with Luigi Cecchi’s Jaguar, but the Maserati driver managed to continue.

Cerqui held on to the lead ahead of Pier Guidi, Stefano Gabellini and Luca Rangoni. The BMW and the Mercedes went off while trying to overtake the Maserati. Johnny Herbert, who was following the trio, spun and rejoined the track to eventually take fifth.

At the last lap Bertolini’s race came to an end as he was trying to overtake Michela Cerruti. The Maserati hit the Mercedes in the rear spinning Cerruti around, and Bertolini retired shortly after with damage.

Cerqui won the race ahead of Pier Guidi, Pigoli and Biagi. Herbert rounded out the top five ahead of Luigi Ferrara, who had engine problems which affected the potential of his Mercedes C63 AMG.

The CAAL Racing driver still leads the International Superstars Series with a 16 points advantage over Andrea Bertolini and 27 over Cerqui, now the best placed BMW Italia driver ahead of Biagi, who is now 32 points clear of Ferrara.

The second race will start at 16.40 (CET).
