First victory for Mattias Ekström since May 2010
Mattias Ekström secured his first win since Valencia in May last year. The Swede held the lead from start to finish at Nürburgring, winning the race ahead of championship leader Bruno Spengler.
Mike Rockenfeller crossed the line as third but held second place until just three laps from the end. The Audi driver was quite close to Ekström at the beginning of the race but dropped back as the race progressed.
Spengler put hard pressure on Rockenfeller in the final half of the race, but was never close enough to try a pass. But with just three laps left, Rockenfeller made a mistake and outbraked him self in to the first corner, allowing Spengler to get past.
Timo Scheider climbed from eighth on the grid to fourth over the line ahead of Martin Tomczyk who started seventh.
Jamie Green crossed the line in sixth ahead of Edoardo Mortara and Gary Paffett. Filipe Alburquerque claimed ninth after a spirited drive ahead of Oliver Jarvis.
The two former Formula One driver Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard had an emotionally loaded clash in the beginning of the race. Schumacher bumped in to Coulthard braking in to the first corner on the second lap and pushed him wide on the exit of the corner. Coulthard had none of it and pushed Schumacher in to a spin in the following corner, resulting in a retirement for Schumacher and Coulthard being forced to pit for a new front.
Spengler pulls away in the championship, seven points ahead of Tomczyk and a further eleven points ahead of Scheider in third. DTM continues at Brands Hatch on the 4th of September.
