Yvan Muller wins race two in Brno

Yvan Muller has closed up in the championship to Rob Huff after winning the second race in Brno with Tom Coronel taking second for ROAL Motorsport.

Michel Nykjaer in the SUNRED León 1.6T started from pole, but had no defence at the standing start from the rear-wheel drive BMWs behind him. Tom Coronel in third had a great start and drove straight down the inside into Turn 1 to take the lead, whilst a great start from Alain Menu saw the Swiss driver up to third at the start from sixth.

Yvan Muller though had an even greater start and better momentum, passing his team-mate before the end of the lap. The reigning World Champion was threatened on the second lap by Menu after he was baulked by Nykjaer, but as Menu tried to pass Muller he realised to the move wasn’t on and backed off but lost a spot to Gabriele Tarquini.

Menu repassed Tarquini for fourth on the next lap, but Muller had now successfully passed Nykjaer and was chasing down Tom Coronel for the lead.

On lap five, Coronel lost the lead to Muller, and was now chased down by the two Chevrolets of Menu and Huff, who were now ahead of Nykjaer.

On lap seven, Kristian Poulsen made a pass on Gabriele Tarquini but the Italian slid into the rear of the BMW, causing minor damage to the bodywork. Poulsen then slid wide, falling behind Tarquini and Villa.

Menu continued to pressure Coronel for second until the end of the race but with no success, with team-mate Rob Huff lying in wait for an error from his Chevrolet team-mate.

Yvan Muller went on to take his second win of the year, with Tom Coronel splitting the Chevrolets in second. Michel Nykjaer held on to fifth to secure the independents’ win for SUNRED, the first with the new 1.6 turbo engine introduced two weeks ago in Hungary.

Rob Huff continues to lead the championship with 187 points, with Yvan Muller 25 points behind and Alain Menu third, 53 points down.

The next round of the championship is around the streets of Porto on July 3rd.
