Paul Di Resta on pole in crash-filled qualifying
Paul Di Resta has got the best possible conditions for the final Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters race of the year. The Scotsman became the first driver to go below 59 seconds around the short street track, posting the lap time 58.937. And there was drama from start to finish in a crash-filled qualifying session.
Title rival Gary Paffett is going to line up right next alongside Di Resta on the grid after setting the second fastest lap time of the qualifying session, 0.108 seconds behind.
Jamie Green made it a Mercedes 1-2-3 in third, 0.281 seconds behind, with Timo Scheider as the best Audi-driver in fourth, 0.340 seconds behind.
But it was a chaotic qualifying session, to say the least, with several crashes and a cancelled Q4 session.
Scheider had a huge crash at the end of the Q3 session, meaning that the Q4 session had to be striked. The German wrecked his Audi A4 and was fortunate to be able to walk away from the crash.
Championship leader Bruno Spengler had to see his chances of taking the 2010 DTM title getting a big blow. The Canadian crashed in the second free practice session and crashed once again in the qualifying. Spengler crashed in Q1 when he was fifth fastest.
Spengler made it back to the pits and his team started to work on the car. The Mercedes team was able to get him back out for the final minutes of the session, but the crash of Scheider meant that Spengler had to abort his lap. The Canadian is going to start 17th and second to last in the race tomorrow.
Markus Winkelhock claimed the fifth spot on the grid ahead of an impressive David Coulthard in sixth, marking his best qualifying session ever in the DTM.
Miguel Molina posted the seventh fastest time ahead of team mates Martin Tomczyk and Mattias Ekström in eight and ninth respectively. Oliver Jarvis rounded off top ten.
