Jyllandsringen next up for Scandinavia
The Swedish Touring Car Championship returns to Jyllandsringen in Denmark for another round with the Scandinavian Touring Car Cup. The season started here in april which saw Tommy Rustad and Robert Schlünssen stepping on top of the podium. This weekend, however, things look a bit different.
Richard Göransson took over the STCC championship lead in the previous race from Robert Dahlgren. The BMW’s and Volvo’s were evenly matched last time the championship visited this track, promising a good battle this weekend.
But there are Danish drivers up to get in the middle of the top fight this weekend. Jan Magnussen was blisteringly fast in the previous Scandinavian round in Gothenburg, despite a late switch to the Chevrolet Lacetti. The Dane is going to carry maximum ballast weight for this race, but is still a force to be reckoned with this weekend.
“If we get the car to go as good as we did in Gothenburg, we can get a good result with us from this weekend. But then, Jyllandsringen is different. It is harder on the tyres, but on the other hand, we have more experience [compared to the STCC teams], so we should start on a reasonably high level,” said Magnussen.
The Volkswagen’s have also gained more penalty weight for this weekend, affecting Fredrik Ekbloms charge for the top three in the championship.
Last time the championship visited this track, the Volkswagen’s were far off pace. The question is how the new S2000 model of the Scirocco is going to perform and what newly appointed third driver Johan Kristoffersson can do with the older and lighter model.
“Jyllandsringen is going to be tougher. There is more acceleration under cornering and our car does not like that. It puts a lot of wear on our front right tyre, just as in Falkenberg. We are going to have to be more careful,” said Volkswagen team boss Tommy Kristoffersson.
While the fight is hard for the Swedish championship, the fight is on for the Scandinavian as well. The top two names are the same, but with Dahlgren ahead of Göransson instead.
Behind the two is DTC racer and Jyllandsringen winner Schlünssen. The German headed the standings before Gothenburg, but Schlünssen had a modest weekend result-wise and is currently 24 points behind Dahlgren.
With Ekblom snapping just three points behind Schlünssen, we should be in for a good race weekend with plenty of fights.
