Phil Glew in the hunt for a BTCC drive
Renault Clio champion Phil Glew has made an impassioned plea to BTCC bosses to give him a chance in 2010. Speaking to TouringCarTimes, the rising star said, “I want teams to give me a look in. I can prove that I can do the job as well as almost anyone out there, but I just need a chance.”
“I believe, especially after something like Clios, which teaches you a lot, that I’ve got a good chance of getting up into touring cars.
It’s going to be hard, I don’t want to kid myself, but at the same time I do believe in myself.”
The comments come as Glew, who won the 2009 Clio title comfortably, strives to put together a touring car package for the coming season, but is coming up against familiar problems.
“We’re speaking to a lot of the teams and we’re trying to strike a deal with one of them,” said the 26-year-old. “The annoying thing with motor racing is it all depends on sponsorship. Luckily I’ve got a great sponsor in WD-40 / 3-In-1 and they’re backing me up in touring cars.
Glew rates himself as 75/25 in favour of making the grid at Thruxton, but revealed that while things were ok for the middle of January, more finances were still needed in order to secure a drive.
The Lincolnshire racer did rule out creating his own team for 2010, citing the valuable touring car experience that existing teams already had that would make such a move “a waste of money.”
The full interview with Phil Glew in which he talks about his championship win and the difficulties he faces in his attempts to join the BTCC, will appear next week, here on TouringCarTimes.
