Top ten Super Touring YouTube-videos

What better way to kill time when the touring car racing season is far away but with the best Super Touring action “captured” on YouTube? TouringCarTimes.com has gathered a list of the top ten YouTube clips from Super Touring era.

Many rank the Super Touring years as the best of the Touring Car racing history. The action was thick, the grids were huge and the characteristic drivers were there.

Clips from the British Touring Car Championship are common, although not surprising as the championship was the strongest during the Super Touring period.

We begin at place ten, a clip from the German championship STW, a flourishing championship, somewhat in the shade of the British equivalent.

10 – STW 1995 at Spa

The STW race at Spa saw a huge field and a huge battle for the lead in both races. Audi versus BMW all the way with a lot of fighting, both between the two manufacturers and within the manufacturers! Keep a look out for the incident between Jörg Müller and Peter Kox.

9 – STCC 1998 Falkenberg

The Swedish Touring Car Championship hosted big grids at the peak of the Super Touring era. The race at Falkenberg in 1998 was an entertaining one with the reversed grid of the second race. Watch out for the clash between the two Volvo-drivers Jan “Flash” Nilsson and Jens Edman.

8 – FIA WTC Cup – Monza 1993

The FIA World Touring Car Cup was launched in 1993 at Monza. The event attracted a huge field of no less than 43 cars. The sight of all those cars coming in to the first corner is, to say the least, special.

7 – BTCC Brands Hatch GP 1996 Highlights

The 1996 season of the BTCC was one of the better. The race at Brands Hatch GP was especially entertaining with battles all though the field for the entire race. Bonus points for the finish of Steve Robertson.

6 – STCC 1999 – Final at Mantorp

The STCC finale in 1999 was a controversial one. Mattias Ekström came together with title rival Tommy Rustad in the final heat of the year, causing a huge start crash. The emotions ran high to say the least!

5 – BTCC Brands Hatch 1992 – Cleland vs. Toyotas

The early Super Touring years provided for some great action. The two opening laps of the BTCC race at Brands Hatch in 1992 saw a special battle between team mates Andy Rouse and Will Hoy, plus John Cleland. The fight ended in a dear way for the two Toyota team mates…

4 – Dramatic STW Final 1999 – Title Decider

The German STW finale in 1999 was another controversial one. The title first went to Uwe Alzen after his rival Christian Abt was hit by Alzen’s team mate Roland Asch. Weeks later, with video evidence shown in this YouTube-clip, the title was handed over to Abt.

3 – BTCC Snetterton 1996 – James Thompson Wins

The 1996 BTCC race at Snetterton was a true classic of entertaining Super Touring races. Smokin’ Jo Winkelhock, Roberto Ravaglia, Alain Menu and Rickard Rydell in a gigantic scrap for the lead, ultimately resulting in the young James Thompson taking the first win ever for the new Vauxhall Vectra.

2 – BTCC 1998 – Nigel Mansell makes the show

A lot of people argue that this was the best race ever during the Super Touring era. While that fact is up to the individual to decide, the race certainly had exciting factors with Formula One star Nigel Mansell right in the thick of the action.

1 – BTCC Silverstone Finale 1992 – last three laps!

A YouTube top ten list of the Super Touring years is impossible to have without this video. The infamous incident between John Cleland and Steve Soper that decided the BTCC 1992 is no doubt deservingly number one in our list!
