Tarquini: “I became champion without knowing”
He became BTCC champion in 1994, ETCC champion in 2003 and he became World Touring Car Championship champion today. But it took a while for the Italian to realize it.
“I became the champion without knowing – the team was smiling and crying but I didn’t have a radio so realize a little bit later,” said Tarquini.
As the final WTCC race weekend started, things looked grim for Tarquini who crashed in to his team mate and championship rival Yvan Muller during qualifying.
“I started the weekend with a crash which is obviously not the best way to win a championship. The mechanics were fantastic and spent all night and one day to re-build the car better than it was before! I must say thank you to the team who are unbelievable,” said Tarquini.
But the first race saw a strong race from the Italian who finished second and a fifth place before the red flags were brought out in the second race secured the title.
“Maybe this was my last chance to be world champion and I took it. It was a tough season especially against great drivers like Yvan (Muller) and Augusto (Farfus),” said Tarquini.
The Italian takes over the title from his team mate Muller and the Frenchman was pleased to see Tarquini taking over the crown.
“Today I had to do my best like I have done all season but unfortunately it didn’t happen. If couldn’t be me as world champion I am happy it is Gabriele (Tarquini). He’s a friend and a great world champion,” said Muller.
