James Thompson: “I lost my sight briefly”
James Thompson never got the chance to take part in the World Touring Car Championship finale of 2009 at Macau. The Brit crashed heavily during qualifying, striking the stranded car of Stefano D’Aste.
“I still don’t really know what happened. After the accident I lost my sight briefly,” said Thompson.
Thompson was unable to avoid the stranded car of D’Aste, completely writing off both cars in the accident.
“It was a big 5G impact but I’d like to thank the medical staff as they were very efficient and professional,” said Thompson.
D’Aste was fortunate to have left his car before the incident, but stayed with Thompson.
“I’d also like to thank Stefano d’Aste, who stayed with me all the time, it was much appreciated as after the accident I lost my sight briefly,” said Thompson.
The crash put an end to Thompson’s outstanding 2009 season where he has taken part in no less than four championships, WTCC, DTC, BTCC and V8SC, all over the world.
“This isn’t the ideal way to finish the season but accidents are just part of racing.
Most of all I feel sorry for the team: this has been our worst weekend of the championship, which nobody deserved. It’s been a very positive season in other respects,” said Thompson.
It is still unclear if Thompson is going to continue for the Lada team in the WTCC 2010 as recent information indicate that the Russian manufacturer might withdraw from the championship next year due to financial difficulties.
