Jan Magnussen takes dominant victory
The penultimate round of the Danish Touring Car Championship is taking place at Ring Djursland, and the first heat of the day was all about points. James Thompson is taking care of his driving duties in Australia, and Jan Magnussen had to claw back all the points he can. Michel Nykjær is defending his points lead over Magnussen.
As soon as the rolling start was given free, Martin Jensen in third attacked Henrik Lundgaard in second. In the turn before the start / goal straight, Jensen moved in front of Lundgaard´s Chevrolet, and took second behind pole sitter Magnussen.
Michel Nykjær drove conservatively in fourth spot, to secure maximum points when point’s table leader Thompson is away. It still seems plausible that Thompson might return for the last DTC round.
The Seat Leon S2000 racers of Jason Watt and Jens Reno Møller had a fight of their own in eight and ninths spot, very far away from the front runners. On lap eight, the Invitation Only class became hotter and closer than usual; after taking class pole sitter Martin Marrill in the start for tenth spot, Marrill attacked Hansen in an outbraking manoeuvre in the last turn before the main straight.
Hansen didn’t see Marrill, resulting in a collision. Hansen had to retire from the race, and Marrill continued on a broken rear rim to secure victory in the class, overtaking Kim Morgan Jensen as well. Hansen did however rejoin to catch enough laps to secure points, but to no avail.
The Independents Cup was won by Per Poulsen of Hartmann Honda racing, pushing his overall attack on Jens Reno Møller´s lead.
Magnussen managed to set a new track record of 51.943 on his way to a very dominant victory, while Jason Watt will be on pole for heat 2, as the first eight on the grid reverse positions.
14.25 will be the place for heat 2.
