Thompson: Race two will be a lottery

You can’t say Danish Touring Car Championship without saying James Thompson. Together with Chevrolet driver Michel Nykjær, they have dominated the series in 2009. And the feat continues this weekend with pole position, fastest time in warm up and victory in race one.

“I had a good start, “ Thompson smiles. “It’s all down to good teamwork, that we have reached so far. But the gap between us are so small, it is literally that close.”

For race two the eight best placed drivers will have their placed switched around, meaning that the eight placed Invitation Only driver, John Hansen in Seat Supercopa will be in pole position. And having some of the favourites, Jason Watt and John Nielsen staring from behind, it will make up for unpredictable racing.

“Race two will have an Invitation Only driver in pole position in pole position. I am sure that he will do well, but starting in eight positions with the switched positions in race two makes it difficult for us.”

“Race 2 will definitely be a lottery; nobody knows how it will fare. Maybe we will have a scrappy race, but it will absolutely be exciting.”

James Thompson will not race further races for Team Dynamics in the BTCC, the seat has been taken over by Johnny Herbert. But there is no drama concerning that. Obligations in Australia makes it hard to get ends to meet time wise.

“I had only a contract for six races, and I am sure that Johnny Herbert will fare well. He is very enthusiastic about it. And the team is very strong. Honestly, it is the best for everyone. I mean, if I should drive the whole season, it would be something else. But I have to race in the V8 Series in Australia, so I had to make that decision.“

Asked about the differences between the DTC and BTCC, Thompson regards the Danish series highly.

“I am very, very sure that the Danish Hartmann Honda would fare very well in the BTCC. It is that strong, I would love to drive it there. It would be right up there in the fight. The BTCC do have a larger field with more cars, and maybe more cars which can be competitive cars. But the DTC is a series with fast drivers and close fights”

“So I think that you can be proud, the cars are good and the series are good!”
