Nielsen’s crash could have been prevented
John Nielsen had a serious crash at the last round of the Danish Touring Car Championship, at FDM Jyllandsringen. Later the Team Telesikring demanded changes at the end of the straight, but it turns out that the changes has already been requested, but denied from the FIA.
”From the track management, we have on our own initiative forwarded a proposal to the FIA, regarding a graveltrap in front of the barrier, and tire wall at the turn at the end of the straight,” Per Bach explained to DTC Media.
”The FIA declined the proposal, due to the risk of a car hitting the gravel trap sideways, could start rolling before reaching the tire wall, and maybe even roll over it.
The tire wall is there to protect marshals and officials, and if it wasn’t there, there would be a risk that a car could continue and land in the middle of the field of cars, when they are in the middle of the two left turns.”
”We are the only track in Denmark, approved for FIA Grade 4 approval. The approval has been reached by continued improvements for the public, officials and drivers. We can’t make any changes on the track, without they are approved in advance and lastly controlled by the FIA.”
John Nielsen is counting his blessings; the crash was one of the most severe in his career.
”My vision returned to normal on Monday, but I am still blue and beaten up, and I still suffer from bent ribs,“ Nielsen explains to DTC Media.
“The car stopped in no time. It was within a meter or two. My helmet cracked, my seat broke. It seems like the crash forced my into the right hand side of the seat, because that is where the seat broke, and I still have a blue hip and bent ribs in my right hand side.”
