Thomspon on top in second practise
James Thompson rules the Padborg Open practice sessions. After the second session, the white Honda Accord with Thompson written on the side was the name of the game. The blue Chevrolet of Henrik Lundgaard started on top, setting a lap time of 1.01,830. But Thompson took it all back when he started a series of fast laps pushing the time back to 1.01.561.
He was soon to be followed by Lundgaard and Nykjær. Meanwhile Jan Magnussen was busy driving between the pits and the track, ironing out the problems which have been haunting the E85 BMW.
Already leading the field by a good margin, Thompson took a late flyer ending the session. The result was almost a carbon copy of the first session. A lap time of 1.01.527! Now awaits the fight for pole, already now the heat is on!
The best privateer driver was Thompson’s teammate, Per Poulsen in sixth place. He was hunting down Watt, who was driving like he was on fire. Best Invitation Only was John Hansen in Seat Supercopa, after a late flyer and overtaking Martin Marrill and Jens Ole Mathiesen in the process.
”Well, it has been a good start“, Thompson explains. “Nothing has been decided yet. We are trying to find a good balance on the car, the car is strong here, and it has always been a good circuit for the Honda.”
“But we will never know, we have been consistently quick through the weekend. That is the most important thing. Then we have the Chevrolets and Jason, they can still pop up. And we can’t forget about Jan.”
The Brit has been busy, driving in both the British Touring Car Championship and the DTC.
“Well, it has been 6 weeks on the trot. Right hand steered car, left hand steered cars. Big circuits, small circuits. But hey, you have to perform, when things are going well for you.”
Qualification for the pole is set for 16.40.
