First time out for Alex Davidson
Alex Davison has completed his first full day aboard his new IRWIN Racing Ford Falcon FG V8 Supercar at the official pre-season test day for the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Queensland Raceway outside Ipswich.
The Stone Brothers Racing designed and manufactured FG Falcon never missed a beat as Davison worked through a pre-planned program for the session.
The day was used for Davidson to get used to his new mount not to set times, and to get to know his new engineer Wes McDougall and the rest of the Irwin racing team.
“Today was the first time I had ever driven a brand new V8 Supercar and have all the attention focussed on me.” beamed Davidson.
“Overall the day in the IRWIN Racing Falcon was good, but clearly the weather did make it frustrating at times.”
Even though it was not about setting times, in the first two hours of the day Davison set the ninth fastest time of the 18 cars in attendance. Some adjustments to the car brought a quicker time in the second two-hour segment as Davison improve to fifth for that session and seventh overall for the day.
“We ran on old tyres that had been sitting on the shelves for over three months, then when we went to put the fresher set on and the heavens opened!”
“There were plenty of positives to come out of the day, but we are very competitive people and we will continue to work on some minor things so that we are in a strong position for the Clipsal 500.”
Davison along with the other top teams didn’t improve their times in the afternoon as intermittent showers took the life out of the track. Although frustrated with the ever-changing weather, the IRWIN Racing team was pleased with the day’s proceedings and importantly feel fully prepared for the opening round, the Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide next week (19-22 March).
Team priciple Ross Stone said: “I was very pleased with how the team worked today and feel we are on the right track with the new car heading to Adelaide.
“The weather was very strange as it was hard to anticipate when the rain was going to come, so our times were not a true indication of where we are at.
“It was our first full test at the track with Alex in the IRWIN Racing car and we made some great progress throughout the day, which I’m sure will further improve next week in Adelaide.”
