Bernd Schneider damages F1 car

Winner of the last DTM race at the Nürburgring, Bernd Schneider, has damaged the 1998 McLaren Formula 1 car. The car, with which Mika Häkkinen won the 1998 title in Formula 1, was driven by Schneider at a classic event in Germany.

During the event at Jüchen near Mönchengladbach the engine of the F1 car stopped. “On the straight the engine stopped all of a sudden”, Schneider said to the German newspaper “Der Rheinishen Post”. “After I turned into a hairpin corner, the engine suddenly turned back on.”

Schneider was suprised by the sudden acceleration of the car and hit a hay stack. The nose and the front suspension got damaged, as Schneider sustained some minor injuries to his left arm.

It was not the only incident that occured during the classic event. A day after the incident with Schneider the event was hampered for two hours, after two Formula Ford cars colided and hit the barriers. A female spectator was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Another five spectators had minor injuries.
