Kia linked with Supercars entry in 2018 with new Stinger GT

Kia Motors have been linked to an entry in the Supercars Championship in 2017 with their new rear-wheel drive Stinger GT model, which could see the field back up to four brands after Volvo’s withdrawal sees the grid down to three for 2017.

The COO of Kia Motors Australia, Damien Meredith, told motoring.com.au back in November that he has been in discussions about a potential programme, but that further details weren’t possible until the official announcement of the road car, which took place today.

“I have two talks with one group,” Meredith had told motoring.com.au

“(But) I’ve told them ‘we can’t give you any info until well into (the) year’,” Meredith continued.

The most likely partner for Kia would be Garry Rogers Motorsport, who’ve abandoned plans to continue racing with their Volvo S60s after Polestar pulled the plug on the programme last year. The team will field a pair of Holden Commodore VFs this year, with the model set to be replaced in 2018 with a non-Australian built replacement, though it’s still likely to carry the Commodore name.
