Gianni Morbidelli and James Nash say the safety car should have been out earlier

Championship contenders James Nash and Gianni Morbidelli have said the conditions in Race 2 at the Salzburgring warranted an earlier deployment of the safety car, due to the treacherous conditions as the rain fell at the Austrian circuit.

Nash and Morbidelli finished fourth and sixth in the race and both reduced the points gap to the leading duo of Stefano Comini and Pepe Oriola in the standings, but .

“There was a point where there was just no grip at all, there was aquaplaning and the safety car should have been out earlier than it was,” said Craft-Bamboo Racing driver Nash. “I don’t know how some of these guys were overtaking, I saw Sergey (Afanasyev) and JK (Vernay) going side-by-side down the straight, but that wasn’t for me.”

WestCoast Racing driver Gianni Morbidelli says there was a risk of a serious accident, with the standing water on the back straight a serious issue for the drivers.

“It was not the conditions to do the race,” said Morbidelli to TouringCarTimes. “In the moments before the safety car it was very, very dangerous. The risk was very high. I understand we need to put on a show, but you also must think about safety and I think today we took a big risk and I think we were lucky nobody had an accident as the conditions were absolutely unacceptable for racing.”
