WestCoast Racing aiming to rent STCC cars to newcomers
Five-time STCC champions WestCoast Racing are stepping back from running in the STCC for the first time since 2002 as they are going to be strategical partners to Volvo’s works team Polestar Cyan Racing. Team owner Dick Jönsson-Wigroth says that they are aiming to rent their existing STCC cars to newcomers.
”I am trying to support younger drivers to be able to rent cars from us. It won’t be WestCoast Racing running the cars, they have to run the cars them selves. But I can provide them with a car that works and then they have to add the rest them selves,” said Jönsson-Wigroth to stcc.se.
The move for WestCoast Racing to run Volvo cars for Cyan Racing, leaving their previous BMW relationship behind, could prove decisive for the STCC grid that has been declining over the last years. But Jönsson-Wigroth says this is how it would have turned out with or without the new deal with Cyan Racing.
”BMW are not enthusiastic about what we are doing in our current form and with that I felt like it would be good to take a break. I do of course want the grid to be full as well, but we need to have more teams like WestCoast Racing. It would not have helped if we were still there in our previous form, I see it like when I step back it opens up for new teams to rent our cars to create something new,” said Jönsson-Wigroth.
WestCoast Racing ran one car in the 2015 STCC for Fredrik Larsson who finished third overall. The plans for Larsson in 2016 are yet to be announced.
