Alfa Romeo 4C chosen as WTCC safety car

The Alfa Romeo 4C coupé has been selected as the safety car for the 2014 FIA World Touring Car Championship season.

The Alfa Romeo becomes the first official safety car since 2012, when the Chevrolet Camaro performed the duty in the US marque’s final season in the Championship. Last year, a variety of cars performed the often called upon task, but this year the WTCC has selected the 4C of the non-competing brand of Alfa Romeo to be the new safety car.

“The Alfa Romeo 4C is a load of advanced technology and glamorous style,” said François Ribeiro, WTCC’s Motorsport Director. “It’s the perfect car to play the role of the safety car in a trendy series like WTCC. We are proud and excited, because the 4C moves the Alfa Romeo brand close to touring car competitions again.”

An Alfa Romeo hasn’t been present on the WTCC grid since 2007, when N.Technology and Azerti Race Automotive fielded between them three 156 S2000s for James Thompson, André Couto and Miguel Freitas at the season finale at Macau.
